Fall 2024 Returning Student Housing Selection

You may only participate in either room reservation OR housing lottery.

If you do not participate in housing selection, you will need to apply for housing and you will be assigned a housing assignment after housing selection is complete. This may result in being in a housing assignment that you do not prefer. We strongly suggest participating in housing selection yourself.

Overview

  • An email will be sent to all students from Sarah Truax (chamberlains@canton.edu) on Monday, March 18 detailing your eligibility to reserve their room, if you can pull/be pulled, and your lottery number.
  • Housing selection provides you the opportunity to decide exactly where you’d like to live for the next academic year.
  • If you intend to live on campus in Fall 2024, it is in your interest to participate in the returning student housing selection process.
  • If you choose to reserve your room, you are not eligible to participate in the housing lottery.
  • If you choose not to participate in housing selection, you will need to apply for housing and you will be assigned a housing assignment after housing selection is complete. Commonly Asked Questions

What if I want to live in my current room next year?

You’ll reply all to the email sent to you by Sarah Chamberlain Truax on March 20th and indicate you’d like to live in the same room. Your email response must be sent by Thursday, March 23rd at 12PM (noon)

Can I reserve my room then try to get a better room at housing lottery?

No, if you reserve your room, you cannot participate in the housing lottery in any way. If you reserve your room, you cannot ‘pull’ other students.

I am eligible to be pulled but I am not able to reserve my room, why?

A select number of suites and rooms are reserved for new and transfer students for next year. These suites will be blocked off during both room reservation and housing lottery. If you live in one of these suites/rooms, you will need to select a different room during housing lottery.

Why do I have this lottery number?

Housing lottery numbers are generated based on:

  • earned credit hours
  • GPA

Therefore, students with higher earned credit hours, and higher GPA will have a lower housing lottery number.

The lower your housing lottery number is, the fewer people go before you when selecting a housing assignment for Fall 2023.

Housing lottery number 100 means 99 other students are eligible to select a housing assignment before you.

I want to live with my friend(s), how do we ensure that we live together?

  • You may select other student(s) that you wish to live with you in an available room/suite, called ‘pulling’
  • First, confirm everyone involved is eligible to be ‘pulled,’ you can find that in your email from Sarah Chamberlain Truax
  • For example, if two friends want to reserve a double room together, they must attend housing lottery together. The person with the lower lottery number can “pull” the other student.  This also works for Kennedy Hall suites.  If five people want to reserve a five-person suite the person with the best lottery number can “pull” the other four students into the suite if they all attend housing lottery together.

How many people can be ‘pulled’?

You can ‘pull’ up to one person in a double room in the traditional halls. You can ‘pull’ up to four people in Kennedy Hall. This changes during housing selection based on room and suite availability. For example, if you have lottery number 132, and when 132 is called there are only 3 bedrooms in suites remaining, you can only pull up to two people.

I have medical accommodation; how do I reserve my room?

If you have special housing accommodation such as a medical single room, medical double room or handicap accessible room please come to the Residence Life Office in Mohawk Hall before Housing Lottery to reserve your room. More information on the medical housing process.

Do I need to pay my housing deposit?

No, we are waiving all housing deposits.

Will there be enough rooms for everyone?

Last year, every student who attended housing lottery got a room on campus.

What if I have class and can’t make it to housing lottery?

You can send a proxy. A proxy is a person you designate to represent you at Housing Lottery. To do this you will need to fill out a .

Can I live on-campus for the fall semester and then move off-campus for the spring semester?

No. All students sign a two-semester housing license (lease). You must live on campus for both semesters. We do consider legitimate requests for internships or if you are graduating mid-year.

Are there students who can’t be pulled?

Yes, students with an overall GPA under 2.0 or a significant disciplinary history cannot be pulled. These students must select a room when it’s their turn at housing lottery.

What if I want to live off-campus in Fall 2023?

  • You need to apply to be released from on-campus housing, Please submit the Housing Release Application.
  • If your release application is approved, you can then begin looking for an apartment off-campus.
  • Please remember: the college has a Mandatory Housing Policy; you are required to live on campus unless you meet one of the following criteria, you can view the eligible criteria here.
  • If you are not approved to live off-campus you will be charged for room and board even if you live in an apartment off-campus. DO NOT sign a lease or commit to an apartment unless you have been approved to live off-campus. You will end up paying for room and board AND paying rent!

What happens if I just move off-campus without getting approval?

You will be charged for room and board even if you are living in an apartment off-campus.

What happens if I just skip this whole thing?

You will be charged for housing and meal plan, but you will not have a room assignment. You can request a room after housing lottery by filling out a housing application at the Residence Life Office.  You will then be assigned a room by the housing staff.

What happens if my request for release from housing is denied?

You can appeal against the decision to the Housing Appeals Committee. If your appeal is denied you will be required to live on-campus.
