Limited Permit
A new law was passed in 2010, allowing dental hygiene graduates to practice dental hygiene with a limited permit. Limited permits are intended to allow an individual to engage in restricted practice from the time s/he graduates from a professional educational program to the time both licensing examinations have been successfully completed with 75% proficiency. Under this new law, individuals practicing under a dental hygiene limited permit can work under the personal supervision of a licensed dentist in New York State. (They may not practice under the "general supervision" of a dentist). The new dental hygiene limited permit law operates the same way as limited permit laws do in many of the other professional programs.
To qualify for a limited permit, a dental hygiene graduate must have satisfactorily completed all requirements for licensure, except for the two licensing examinations. As the title implies, a "limited permit" is issued for a limited period of time. To apply for this limited permit, graduates of the SUNY Canton Dental Hygiene program must submit a completed application along with the required supporting documentation signed by a notary public as well as the required $128.00 application fee to the NYS Education Department.
Interested parties may acquire an application by contacting the NYS Education Dept at 518-474-3817, ext 550 or by visiting the following website: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/dent/dent1ll.pdf
