The National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) has chosen SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam to receive the 2013 Innovation Award for their shared service achievements. The award recognizes higher education institutions for demonstrating excellence in process improvements and resource enhancements. Under the leadership of joint Vice President Natalie L. Higley, the two Colleges have realized significant administrative efficiencies and financial savings by sharing services and positions. Higley accepted the award at the NACUBO annual meeting in July.
SUNY Potsdam & SUNY Canton Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Shared Services Between the Two Campuses
The SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton campuses today outlined a roadmap to ensure continued success in shared services over the next two years. SUNY Potsdam Interim President Dennis L. Hefner and SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph C. Hoffman signed a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions in their first public engagement together, at a ceremony held on the Potsdam campus. Employees who are currently in shared positions, or whose departments are actively sharing services, were invited, as were the College Councils, local government officials and other members of the Associated Colleges and academic community.
SUNY Canton has selected Alan P. Mulkin as Deputy Chief of University Police and SUNY Potsdam has chosen Timothy M. Ashley II, to work in the same capacity. Mulkin is the former Chief of the Canton Village Police Department. Ashley has been with SUNY Potsdam’s University Police force since 2009. Both will report to Chief John Kaplan, a 1982 SUNY Potsdam graduate, who oversees the University Police departments at both institutions.
When it began in 2011, one of the primary goals for SUNY in sharing services was to provide collaborative services to multiple campuses where campuses had either performed the service independently or the service had not existed before. Over our 64 campuses, SUNY started looking at how it spent money on things like paper and computers, and what valuable services exist on what campuses like printing, addressing veterans’ needs, or food service. But what does that mean for students?
State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher today announced that the Campus Alliance between SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton has received a national award for its shared services achievements under the leadership of Vice President for Business and Administration Natalie Higley.
Kyle A. Brown, a 2003 SUNY Potsdam graduate and the former director of Information Services at SUNY Canton, has been appointed the Chief Information Officer for both campuses. In the new role, Brown will also oversee the Computing and Technology Services department at SUNY Potsdam.
The two University Police departments at SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton will soon share a chief. John Kaplan will assume the position of Chief of Police for both forces beginning on Jan. 19, 2013.
As the fall semester draws to a close, SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton are continuing to make great strides toward shared services offerings to streamline and bolster services on both campuses. The campus alliance work is advancing in several important areas.
In the most recent step toward the goal of greater shared services, SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam have selected Glen R. Bogardus to provide interlibrary loan (ILL) support to both campuses.
SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam have appointed the first chief financial officer to serve both campuses, as part of their ongoing shared services strategy. Natalie Higley has been selected as the Vice President of Business Affairs and Administrative Services for both institutions.
SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam are pleased to announce the appointment of the first employee who will serve both institutions. Patrick Massaro is a unique fit for the newly created position of veterans and military services coordinator, a joint position that will serve students on both campuses.
