The 40th annual national TRIO Day will be celebrated at SUNY Canton and other college campuses across the country on February 26, 2005.

The federally funded TRIO programs help disadvantaged students prepare for and participate in higher education. SUNY Canton recently became host of the Upward Bound program that was previously hosted by St. Lawrence University.

Congress created TRIO in 1965 in an attempt to give disadvantaged students opportunities in higher education.  Some programs, such as Upward Bound, prepare high-school students for college by working with disadvantaged students during their academic school year and providing a summer residential program on a college campus.

Other TRIO programs help traditional and non-traditional aged college students. Student Support Services helps students currently in college, the Educational Opportunity Center serves adults seeking an education beyond high school, and the McNair Program supports college students interested in a graduate degree.

SUNY Canton Upward Bound Counselor Nathan Sunday said success stories are plentiful, and pointed to 2003 Salmon River High School graduate Amberdawn LaFrance as an example.

LaFrance was an avid Upward Bound Program participant for three years. Currently she is majoring in Animal Science at Cornell University with the aim of becoming a veterinarian. During her participation with Upward Bound, LaFrance had the chance to be a part of the Canton Upward Bound’s summer Work Study Program, offering her exposure and experience to the field of Veterinary Science.

LaFrance says the Upward Bound experience was instrumental in assisting her with making the decision to attend college and choosing a field of study. The program also provided LaFrance guidance with the college application and financial aid process.

According to Sunday, “As with many high school students, Amberdawn faced many obstacles in high school to attain access to college, including the anxiety which often accompanies leaving home to attend college. Amberdawn, like so many other Upward Bound students, took advantage of the opportunities Upward Bound offers and is well on her way to fulfilling her aspirations with confidence, knowledge, and the motivation to succeed.”
