Text Box: We could use many words to describe the purpose of Upward Bound, but perhaps the best word is opportunity. After all, we are continuously putting forth activities and services for our students’ benefit. Tutoring is provided to improve your academic skills and motivation. Counseling and Advising are provided to help you find direction and to think through your decisions. Stipends serve as incentives for your effort. Field trips and college visits expose you to all the possibilities that are right at your doorstep. The opportunities are a bit different during the summer, but they are there nonetheless. Opportunity represents potential. How does potential become performance? Being a UB student provides a wealth of opportunities. It is our sincere hope to see strong participation and effort in all of these areas from our students. Surely, those who take the most advantage of their opportunities will be the students who create the best future for themselves. How are you building your future? Creating a better future for yourself depends on you more than anyone else. This is not a one-time, earth-shattering-moment-kind-of-decision. You make these choices every day. You have to decide every period of the school day. “Am I going to pay attention or write notes/day dream?” You have to decide when you come home at night. “Am I going to do my homework/study or play SONY Playstation/IM people all night?” You have to decide at 10 p.m. “Am I going to get at least 8 hours of sleep and be well-rested tomorrow or will I be too tired to pay attention again?” Many of you are off to a good start. First marking period grades appear to be on the rise for many of our students. Remember that the second marking period tends to be more demanding and will therefore require more effort.
