Text Box: Years ago, just after I had earned my M.Ed. in Counseling from UNC Chapel Hill, I received a card from my in-laws. On its face were these words from the famous writer Henry Thoreau:
“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
I graduated over seven years ago and the card has faded now, but still it hangs in my office, offering me inspiration when I need it and reminding me of my purpose in working with each of you. Most of you have more potential than you can yet fathom. Among you may be Fortune 500 presidents, future attorneys, engineers, videogame programmers, teachers, and actors. You are as bright as any group of Upward Bound students that I have known.
As the school year progresses and the work gets harder, keep your goals in mind. Thoreau was right. It’s all about setting a course for yourself and then believing in your vision. You can and will be successful. So stay focused. Fire it up and keep that fire lit all year long! We’ll be right behind you.
