Upward Bound
Summer Component
The summer program is a six-week (Sunday through Friday) instructional program designed to offer opportunities for students to enhance their academic and personal skills. The program begins at the end of June and lasts until the first days of August.
Morning classes are designed to bolster academic abilities in high school courses (college preparatory). Afternoon classes offer a more "hands-on" approach with experimental learning courses.
During the residential component, students live in residence halls on the SUNY Canton Campus, with males and females living in separate buildings. Students are supervised by Tutor Counselors who mentor and plan evening activities.
A positive atmosphere is created to provide students with a sense of community, leadership, and self-responsibility.
Upward Bound students have access to all University recreational facilities. Also, they are able to attend workshops, films, dances, and cultural events throughout the summer.
During the weekends, students participate in field trips and community service projects or return home until Sunday night. Field trips are designed to expose students to people, places, and events outside their local community. Recent trips have included New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Boston. As part of the students' participation, they receive a stipend each week if all expectations are met.
