Women's History of Northern New York
"The young women of today, free to study, to speak, to write, to choose their occupation, should remember that every inch of this freedom was bought for them at a great price. It is for them to show their gratitude by helping onward the reforms of their own times, by spreading the light of freedom and of truth still wider. The debt that each generation owes to the past it must pay to the future".
~ Abigail Scott Duniway, suffrage organizer in the Pacific Northwest

New York is famous for many women who have made history. Great women such as Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Harriet Tubman, Margaret Sanger, and Sojourner Truth are recognized for their significant part of women's suffrage and fighting for women's rights throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. These remarkable women will remain notorious long into the future for the fight they put up against America during those times.
But what about Northern New York? There is a void in Northern New York where we think more great women should be placed. It is our goal as a class, to fill this void with women from the local areas we believe are honorable and worthy of that attention; with women we feel made a difference and should be recognized for it.
Some of these women include: Corintha Hall, Dr. Mary Ellen Bryan, Ella Main, Emma Baxter, Gertrude Richardson, Harriett Shoen, Jennie Rogers Munson, Kateri Tekawitha, Lenora Barry, Linda Richards, Leah Rogers, Lucia Heaton, Mabel Lila Wait, Mabel Sprague Laidlaw, Marion Sanger Frank, Martha Dodd, Martha Reben, Olympia Brown, Phoebe Orvis, Rhonda Fox Graves, Sara Clark Chittenden, and Stella Goodrich. Some organizations we thought should receive some recognition are: The AAUW, the Grey Nuns of Ogdensburg, the League of Women Voters, and the WCTU.
As a class we feel these women and organizations should not be left out history. We found many interesting facts about all of the women in Northern New York; interesting facts which are uncovered for all of our visitors to read about on our website!
