SUNY Canton is preparing for its first day of the fall 2022 semester, with new students, more four-legged friends at a more accessible and environmentally efficient campus.

New residential students will begin moving in on Monday, August 22 and returning students can check in to the college’s residence halls Wednesday, August 24. SUNY Canton’s first day of classes is Thursday, August 25.

“Our college is ripe with potential and opportunity as we look to another academic year,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “We’ll be looking forward to several new initiatives and improved facilities while continuing to move the college forward.”

Early estimates indicate the college’s total enrollment will be about 2,800 students including more than 1,000 new, transfer and readmitted students. SUNY Canton offers rolling admissions, allowing students to apply right up to the first day of classes. The Admissions Office has been placing special emphasis on recruiting students who have previously attended college but who did not earn their degree.

“We’re seeing the most gains in our non-traditional and returning student populations,” said Melissa J. Evans, the college’s executive director of enrollment. “With our strengths in online education, coupled with our applied and in-demand academic programs, more students are looking to SUNY Canton to advance their careers and earning potential.”

New this year, students can bring their canine companions to live with them on campus. The college has created a Dog Floor in Rushton Hall, which will welcome it’s first four-legged occupants this semester. The newest housing option comes in addition to the famous Pet Wing in Mohawk Hall, the one-year-old Esports Wing in Heritage Hall, and other themed housing options.

“This is the next phase of our evolution as a nationally renowned pet-friendly college,” said SUNY Canton Director of Residence Life John M. Kennedy. “Animal companions are an important part of our students’ lives, so expanding this program helps maintain a community-like atmosphere where they feel comfortable and supported.”

Rendezvous dining facility in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center will be offering expanded food options when it reopens on August 24. The SUNY Canton College Association, Inc., will be adding a “Hershey’s” specialty shake and sundae shop and a healthy snack and salad location.

“Center Grill in Rendezvous will feature American classics, such as a variety of cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, pizza and grilled sandwiches,” said College Association Executive Director Jeffrey D. Taylor. “New to Rendezvous this year will be an all-day breakfast menu. We’ll be adding mobile ordering as the semester progresses.”

Roos Court, a diner at the intersection of Wicks, MacArthur and Cook Halls, will be also upgrading its offerings with submarine sandwiches.

Numerous renovation projects are underway across campus, with new construction to the outdoor corridor linking French Hall with the Roselle Academic Plaza. The project also includes the addition of an outdoor amphitheater. All the college’s physical improvements are designed to increase accessibility and sustainability.

In accordance with SUNY guidelines, the college has revised its COVID policy for the upcoming year. Students who plan to have an on-campus presence are required to be fully vaccinated with one of the primary series of shots and are strongly encouraged to keep up to date with boosters. It will only be regularly testing students with approved medical or religious exemptions. Masks or face coverings are no longer required in indoor spaces, but the college still strongly recommends and condones their usage, especially when working directly with at-risk individuals and those who are immunocompromised.
