Felix Ramirez said the biggest realization he’s had at SUNY Canton was that he wasn’t too old to go to college. He’ll turn 33 this year and is on track to graduate from the Health and Fitness Promotion program in 2027. He also works at the Roos House Fitness Center.

“I guess I would say it's been a lot easier for me academically in comparison to high school,” Felix said. “I'm a lot more focused than I was when I was a lot younger, and I like everything about being in school. It used to be awkward sitting in class knowing you're the oldest one there. After a while, I just got used to it.”

When asked who his favorite faculty or staff member was, he responded that he got along with so many of them that he couldn’t choose only one person.

He said he tore his Achilles tendon during a friendly on-campus basketball game over the summer, and he was worried that it wouldn’t heal before the fall semester began.

“My leg was wrapped up in a cast for two months, so I was only getting around on crutches,” he recalled. “I never missed a day of work or class because of all the friends I made on campus, including students, staff at Chaney, staff at the library, my bosses, and just nice people who work out at our fitness center.”

After graduation, he’d like to become a strength and conditioning coach and plans to earn more certifications. He also said he’s going to keep fitness at the forefront of his life in the future. “I've always wanted to open my own gym,” he said.
