Cory Liu of Markham, Ontario, came to SUNY Canton to play hockey and study in the College’s popular Cybersecurity program.

Three years later, the student-athlete is a research assistant in the Data Science Innovation Lab on campus and a student worker in the Information Services Department. He said all his responsibilities keep him very busy, but he is happy.

“It’s a privilege to be doing everything I’m doing,” Cory said. “I feel very lucky and fortunate to do everything I’m doing and to have a lot of great professors by my side.”

He recently co-authored a paper with Assistant Professor Medhi Ghayoumi, who teaches in the Cybersecurity and Data Science and Analytics programs. The team is researching an Automated Mental Health Assessment Tool to screen for stress using speech, language, and computer-use patterns.

Cory said he loves being a student-athlete, and it has helped him learn the importance of time management. The men’s hockey team is currently 2-0 after starting their season. “We’re off to a good start and very happy with all the hard work, and keeping the momentum,” he said. “I’m looking forward to another great weekend.”

After he graduates in May 2027, he plans to pursue a career in the cybersecurity field and play professional hockey. “Being a third year now, I have learned how quickly time goes by and how you should never take a day for granted,” he said.
