Kylah Small
Kylah Small from Moose Cree First Nation in Moose Factory, Ontario, is one of the SUNY Canton students celebrating her identity and achievements during Native American Heritage Month.
“Being a Native American student is something I walk proudly with,” she said. “I am very open and loving of my culture and where I come from. I uphold great pride in my heritage, and it is something I carry with me every day, both in school and at the rink. It is part of my identity and the foundation of who I am.”
She chose SUNY Canton because of its small-town comfort and close-knit community. “Having close connections both in school and within our hockey team was crucial for me when it came to choosing a school,” Kylah said. “I can confidently say that I made the right choice with Canton.”
Kylah said the Physical Therapist Assistant program is special because of the many opportunities and experiences it provides. “There is so much hands-on training, which is something that I value within the program,” she said. “It helps me build the skills I require to pursue physical therapy.”
Her favorite class is Advanced Modalities in Physical Therapy, taught by School of Science, Health, and Criminal Justice Professor Deborah Molnar.
When she completes her Physical Therapist Assistant degree, she plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Health and Fitness Promotion and eventually pursue her graduate degree.
