Skylar Saumier
Skylar Saumier from Norwood is a first-generation student whose semester studying abroad in Barbados became an impactful part of her life. She is majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology.
“After this big move of studying abroad, I realized I love new things and like bigger challenges, which inspired my major change to Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology,” she said. “I wanted to challenge myself and see how much I truly am capable of. I’m glad I made this change because in my major, we discuss materials used in everyday items that people don’t really think twice about – like making concrete for a road or testing if steel is strong enough for a project.”
She is also part of SUNY Canton’s Steel Bridge Team. “This club has been very eye-opening for me in the major, and it’s very nice to see hands-on what we are actually working on and building as a result of the work we did,” Skylar said. Her favorite classes are Physics and Civil Engineering Materials.
Since coming to SUNY Canton, she said the most significant lesson she has learned is the importance of patience. “By the time I have finished school, I have been there for five years, it has felt like a long journey, but SUNY Canton has taught me how to enjoy my journey to success and that good things come to those who wait,” she said.
After she graduates in 2027, she plans to travel the world as much as she can.
