Melissa Garcia Ramos
Melissa Garcia Ramos is an online student from Colton who studies from her home in Bellmore. She said she chose SUNY Canton for a fresh start and a chance to build a better future for herself and her four children.
In addition to being a full-time mom and running her own custom printing business, Melissa recently competed at SUNY Canton’s Launch Day, where student entrepreneurs pitch innovative ideas. Her business concept earned third place. “It was an incredible experience,” she said. “Being recognized for something I’ve built from scratch meant so much to me.”
As a fully online student, she balances raising her family, managing her business, and studying in the Early Childhood program. “It’s challenging, but the flexibility has made it possible for me to continue my education,” Melissa said. “Even though I’m not on campus, the professors have made me feel included and supported.”
She chose her major because of the impact her own teachers had on her growing up. “My teachers often became my support system,” she said. “They encouraged me, protected me, and helped shape who I became. I want to be that person for other children, someone who sees them, believes in them, and makes them feel safe when life is chaotic.”
Her favorite class is Early Childhood Development. “It shaped the way I understand children, families, and the impact that experiences have on lifelong growth,” she said. “I’ve had amazing instructors, but Senior Lecturer Christina Martin and Distinguished Teaching Professor Maureen Maiocco stand out the most. They’ve inspired me, challenged me, and supported me in ways that have truly shaped my academic journey.”
After graduating in May 2027, Melissa plans to continue growing her business while beginning her career in the early childhood field. Eventually, she hopes to open her own childcare center, combining her passion for entrepreneurship with her commitment to supporting children and families.
