James Trimm
With his Automotive Technology degree in hand, James Trimm of Colton left SUNY Canton in 2007 to pursue his career. Now he’s back following military service to create new connections in the Electrical Construction and Maintenance program.
“My draw to SUNY Canton was its strong foundation, amazing instructors, and hands-on building trades programs,” James said. “When I get here, I am working towards my goals.”
During his time away from college, he enlisted in the Air Force and served for 9 years as a Civil Engineer Electrical Craftsman. He said he was stationed in Minot, North Dakota; McGuire, New Jersey; and Watertown. He was deployed twice and finished his service as an Air Force Recruiter.
He chose his second degree based on his work in the Air Force. “It is so enjoyable to share my love of electrical construction with my colleagues in my major,” he said.
His second degree has allowed him time to reflect on his time at SUNY Canton.
“It is nice to see all the improvements and renovations made to the campus,” he said. “When I first got here, the first iPhone came out, YouTube did not exist, and Facebook was just beginning.”
Following graduation in May 2026, he plans to obtain his electrical license and work in the North Country.
