Edram Gbekou is from Quebec City, Canada, and came to SUNY Canton to grow as a person. He is a guard on the men’s basketball team and is studying Computer Information Systems.
By coming to SUNY Canton, he was taking a step outside of his comfort zone. “I came here not knowing exactly what to expect, but I knew I wanted to build something bigger than myself,” Edram said. “I’m not just trying to be known as a basketball player; I want to be recognized as someone who works hard, treats people with respect, and represents where I come from with pride. Being far from home has pushed me to mature faster, stay disciplined, and lean on my faith and my goals.”
Being an international student has added another layer of growth to his journey. “It also made me more open-minded because I get to meet people from different backgrounds every day,” he said. “Being an international student athlete has shaped me into a more responsible, focused, and driven person.”
He chose his major because he has always been fascinated by technology and deeply loves anything involving computers, constantly seeking to learn more. Edram said one of the unique college experiences he enjoyed was creating his own website. “I remember feeling proud seeing it actually come to life on my screen after putting in all that work and coding it myself,” he said.
This season, Edram has scored 165 points, averaging 7.2 points per game. He has 25 assists for the year and 10 steals.
After he graduates in May 2028, he plans to explore the opportunities technology offers and continue playing basketball.
