Mechanical Engineering Technology major Mitch Timerman of LaFargeville co-founded the Forging Club and is the lead fabricator for the college's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter’s steel bridge. He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

“I picked my major because it is a very hands-on major that will prepare me for a wide variety of engineering jobs,” he said. “My favorite part of my major has been learning the design process for making parts, designing parts for applications in my life, and turning my designs into reality.”

Since coming to SUNY Canton, the most significant thing he has learned is the manufacturing and fabrication aspects of engineering. “My first big project was machining and engraving commemorative coins for Women in Engineering and SUNY Canton’s open houses,” he said.

Mitch’s favorite class was Manufacturing Processes I. His favorite staff members are Instructional Support Technician Neil Haney, and Instructional Support Associates Andrew Reiter and Courtney Rookey. He also noted Associate Professor Dr. Lucas Craig as an influential faculty member.

As a member of the ASCE Student chapter, Mitch has had the opportunity to compete at West Point Military Academy and Louisiana Tech. He has helped fabricate the bridges used in the last two competitions and is currently working on this year’s bridge.

After he graduates in May 2027, he plans to get a job and hopes to launch his own CNC machining business.
