Alfredo Pabón
Leaving Puerto Rico to pursue his dreams, international student Alfredo Pabón has discovered a community that inspires his success. The infielder for the men’s baseball team is majoring in Health and Fitness Promotion.
“It is not easy being away from home, and your culture, and it is certainly something that takes courage and heart to be a part of,” Alfredo said. “I have been blessed with the circle that I have, and everyone has been accepting of who I am and where I come from. I enjoy sharing and learning new ways of life from the people that surround me daily, and it’s refreshing when I can always be myself.”
His biggest takeaway from SUNY Canton is the meaningful connections he’s made with people from around the world. “I would never have guessed that I would have this special experience of being able to explore abroad and meet so many people from different areas,” he said. “To learn that even though we are all so different, there are always ways for everyone to make valuable connections.”
Alfredo picked his major because of his love for sports and fitness. “I like the idea of learning how to take better care of my body mentally and physically, especially if I can take valuable knowledge for other people to do the same thing,” he said.
Something Alfredo loves about his major is the hands-on classes that let him gain valuable experience. He also enjoys the wide variety of classes that are offered in the program.
After graduating in May 2027, he wants to be a strength and conditioning coach.
