Brett Miller
Brett Miller of Parishville came to SUNY Canton to get a second degree after working in horticulture for nearly a decade. He is a sophomore in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology program.
“I told myself that if I don't begin down a new path in life, it will only be more difficult down the line,” he recalled. “It took some adjusting to return to school in my 30's, but I am so glad that I did.”
This past summer, he moved back to the North Country and decided to enroll at SUNY Canton to pursue a higher-paying career. Now he is the president of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) student chapter.
"Before coming to SUNY Canton, I had barely thought about concrete," he said. "Being so new to both engineering and concrete, it was amazing to hear about the latest research and see how many industries and academics devote their lives to it.”
He recently attended an ACI conference and competition in Chicago, where SUNY Canton competed against schools from all over the world. At the conference, they placed 1st in strength and finished 6th overall, 2nd among U.S. schools. Next spring, he wants the ACI club to compete in the “concrete bowling ball” competition.
After graduating in May 2028, he is thinking about pursuing his growing interest in concrete materials research.
