Matthew Gattus
Matthew Gattus of Callicoon, a Cybersecurity major, first became interested in the field in seventh grade after a computer virus taught him a hard lesson about online security.
He chose SUNY Canton for its location, and its Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense designation from the Department of Defense helped seal the deal. The program also offers hands-on learning experiences that set it apart from others. “The most unique thing about the Cybersecurity major that everyone has to do to get the degree is visit the dark web in the ethical hacking class,” he said.
Matthew’s favorite staff member is Senior Lecturer Minhua Wang. “I have gained much wisdom from him and our talks during and after classes,” he said.
He helped grow SUNY Canton’s Cyber Club from a small group of members to 28 active members, with alumni staying involved through Discord. He helps members get involved in activities and competitions, including the CNY Hackathon and VICEROY's Shadow Watch.
Matthew is also an active member of the college’s Forging Club, which gives students hands-on experience with metalworking and engineering. Last year, he and two teammates forged an axe for a national competition. SUNY Canton’s axe earned fourth place out of 22 collegiate teams.
He graduates in May 2027.
