SUNY Canton Expects Record Summer Session

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

SUNY Canton has opened registration for its Summer Session and is expecting a record number of student enrollments to accompany its largest and most comprehensive list of summer offerings.

Summer Session will include 100 online courses and 20 on campus classes beginning June 1 and concluding August 20. It consists of three separate sessions, allowing students the opportunity to enroll in several courses during the three-month span.

“We’ve experienced extraordinary growth in our Summer and Winter Sessions the past few years,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Students from all over New York State have realized how convenient it is to catch up or get ahead with our online courses without interfering with their summer plans.”

Last year’s Summer Session saw a 38 percent increase over 2008 with more than 1,000 total enrollments. Since 2007, SUNY Canton’s summer programming has grown more than 100 percent. Much of that success stems from a high number of enrollments from students throughout the SUNY system and private colleges. More than half of the students taking summer courses were from colleges other than SUNY Canton.

SUNY Canton offered its first four online summer courses in 2002. Since, the online selections have grown consistently, reaching 65 courses during Summer Session 2009 and at least 100 this summer.

“I’d advise students to sign up early, particularly for our General Education courses. Those have a tendency to fill up quickly,” said SUNY Canton OnLine Director Kyle Brown. “We’re dedicated to bringing the same high-quality education we offer in our classrooms right to students’ fingertips.”

General Education courses, or Gen Ed requirements, fulfill numerous major requirements and are therefore highly sought after.  “These courses easily transfer to other SUNY schools,” Brown added. “We offer courses that count towards other majors and degrees, coinciding directly with what students are looking to achieve between traditional semesters.”

Course registration will remain open until either the first day of classes of each session or until courses are full. Course topics range from general education courses to offerings in many of SUNY Canton’s career-driven academic programs.  For more information, or to register, visit www.canton.edu/courses/summer.html.

SUNY Canton Offers Largest Winterterm Selection

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

SUNY Canton will be offering its largest and most comprehensive Winterterm to date. Registration is now available online. Courses will begin on December 21 and conclude on January 17.

Winterterm

“Historically, we’ve had one of the largest Winterterm online offerings available,” noted SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Students from all over the state enroll in our courses.”

SUNY Canton OnLine Director Kyle Brown noted that approximately 80 percent of the 550 enrollments during the 2008-2009 Winterterm were not full-time SUNY Canton students, but rather students from other colleges who needed to catch up or get ahead on their general education requirements.

“Right now we’re offering 60 courses for Winterterm,” he said. “The classes that tend to be most popular are the General Education Courses, which are also referred to as Gen Ed Requirements or Gen Ed  Foundations. Those are the key courses that allow students to get ahead or catch up with the requirements within their majors.”

Brown mentioned that the four-week semester is an attractive fiscal option for students who are looking to save money on their education. “Students don’t have to travel, or set up residencies to participate in online courses,” he pointed out.

The college began offering a completely online Winterterm in 2005-06 with 18 classes and 160 enrollments. Annually, the program has grown with more courses and more students. During the 2007-08 session there were more than 350 enrollments in 34 courses, and the previously noted 550 enrollments in 48 courses in 2008-09.

The growth in popularity of these courses has led the College to open enrollment early, and Brown suggests that students register early through www.canton.edu/winterterm/.

SUNY Canton currently offers several completely online programs, including an associate degree in Criminal Justice, and bachelor’s degrees in Management, Finance, and Legal Studies, through its web-based branch, SUNY Canton OnLine. Several other programs, like Nursing, Veterinary Technology Management,  and Dental Hygiene have optional online junior and senior years that can allow students to get their four-year degree after joining their profession.

SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years. Construction is now underway for the College’s new Convocation, Athletic, and Recreation Center.
