Admission as a First Time Student

Candidates for admission to the college must meet the following minimum requirements (to be considered for admission):

  1. Be a graduate of a secondary school accredited by its State Education Department, hold a high school equivalency diploma with a minimum score of 245/2450, or meet certain home-school criteria.
  2. IEP diplomas are not considered. Students with an IEP diploma must pass the high school equivalent with a score of 245/2450.
  3. Satisfied the minimum course prerequisites for the selected curriculum
  4. SAT/ACT scores are required for all four year programs; they are recommended but not required for our two year programs.
  5. A student may be required to take our ACCUPLACER exam for placement in English. Students are exempt if they:
    • Achieve a minimum NYS English Regents score of 75
    • Achieve a minimum SAT verbal score of 420
    • Achieve a minimum ACT score of 17 on the English and Reading sections

The Office of Admissions reserves the right to request additional information, and applicants may, of their own accord, submit additional supportive documents.

Home Schooled Students

Home schooled students must provide the following as part of their application for admission to SUNY Canton:

  1. Letter of Intent that has been submitted to home school superintendent for each year of high school home schooling.
  2. Individualized Home Instruction Plans (IHIP) submitted to home school district for each year of high school home schooling.
  3. Letter from home school district approving of IHIPs.
  4. All quarterly reports.
  5. Annual assessment for each year of high school home schooling.
  6. Transcript demonstrating completion of high school (including test grades from annual assessment standardized tests).

Home schooled students are also required to complete one of the following:

  1. High school equivalent with 240/2400 or better**
  2. Letter from the home school district superintendent stating that the home school program is complete

In addition to submitting the above, all students are required to take the ACCUPLACER exam for placement purposes.

**Successful completion of the high school equivalent is highly recommended.
The above is in compliance with section 100.10 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

When to Apply for Admission

Prospective Students are encouraged to submit their application before April 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.
