SUNY Canton to Host Seven Summer 2024 Day Camps

SUNY Canton's Center for Workforce, Community & Industry Partnerships (WCIP) will host seven fun, educational summer day camps designed for a variety of grade levels and areas of interest.

Each camp runs for a one-week period (Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). All campers must bring a water bottle, nut-free lunch and snack each day; however, the college is offering a fee-based daily bagged lunch, drink and snack that can be purchased during the registration process. The "RC Engineering STEM" and "STEMtastic" summer camps are being offered as a partnership between WCIP and the Adirondack North Country Association, with funding support from NYSERDA. As part of the funding support, if a family is eligible for NYSED free or reduced meals through their home school district, they are also eligible for reduced summer camp tuition. Title: RC Engineering STEM Camp

Description: Students get in the driver's seat for intense fender-to-fender, high-flying off-road action where they retrofit a remote control (RC) car to improve drive time. Campers will engage in sustainability and learn how modifications, including tires and solar charging can impact the performance of a vehicle. At the end of the week, they will race a modified car and the best performer wins! Each camper will be allowed to take home their RC car and equipment.

Grade level: 7th to 12th (the grade level refers to the grade the student will enter in the 2024-2025 academic year)
Dates: Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12
Cost: $550 per participant. Cost includes RC car, spare parts and all equipment each participant can keep.

Title: STEMtastic

Description: This week of STEM-related exploration focuses on sustainability. Campers will engage in the process of sustainability through hands-on experiments targeting solar, hydro, wind, building and living activities. Each day, participants will be tasked with a new STEM activity fostering an enthusiasm for sustainable building.

Grade level: 5th to 8th (the grade level refers to the grade the student will enter in the 2024-2025 academic year)
Dates: Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26
Cost: $500 per participant

Title: Junior CSIs

Description: Students will enjoy a week of mystery exploring the world of forensic science. Campers will engage in fingerprint processing, footwear evidence collection, DNA extraction, crime scene sketching and more. Participants will be tasked with a new forensic discipline fostering an enthusiasm for the science behind solving crime.

Grade level: 9th to 12th (the grade level refers to the grade the student will enter in the 2024-2025 academic year)
Dates: Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12
Cost: $400 per participant

Title: Writing Workshop Camp

Description: Students will learn the tenets of creating writing in several genres, including fiction, poetry and storyboarding. Campers will engage in workshop etiquette, and begin work on a project in the genre of their choosing.

Dates: Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19 (the grade level refers to the student your child will enter in the 2024-2025 academic year)
Cost: $400 per participant

Title: Digital Manga/Comic Bootcamp 

Description: Students will learn the digital drawing application Procreate on iPads. Campers will create characters, storyboards and final pages for a short digital manga. Guided lessons will highlight different styles and techniques using Procreate tools for drawing, text, layout and publication. Workshops and critiques will be used throughout the camp to help students develop individual style, expression and visual storytelling. Students will also be introduced to techniques for moving their stories into an animated form using hand-drawn 2D rigged characters.

Cost: $400 per participant

Title: Tiny Scientists

Description: Participants will have fun exploring the human body, plants, animals, mixed media, geocaching and DNA. Campers will engage in the process of science through hands-on experiments, projects and exploration. Each day they will be tasked with a new challenge fostering an enthusiasm for science and nature.

Grade level: 1st to 3rd (the grade level refers to the grade the student will enter in the 2024-2025 academic year)
Dates: Camp #1: Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26; Camp #2: Monday, July 29 to Friday, Aug. 2
Cost: $400 per participant

Title: Young Einsteins

Description: Participants will have fun exploring the human body, plants, animals, mixed media, geocaching and DNA. Campers will engage in the process of science through hands-on experiments, projects and exploration. Each day they will be tasked with a new challenge fostering an enthusiasm for science and nature.

Cost: $400 per participant
