SUNY Canton Winterterm Continues to Grow
CANTON– SUNY Canton’s online Winterterm semester will be offering more courses than ever in its four-year history.
Nearly 50 courses will be offered through SUNY Canton OnLine. The courses begin on Dec. 22 and conclude on January 14. Registration is easy and has already begun online at www.canton.edu.
“Each year, we’ve grown to meet the educational demands of our students,” said SUNY Canton Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs William R. Trumble. “This year, we had a record number of enrollments during our Fall Semester. Following that trend, we are expecting the largest Winterterm semester to date.”
The college began offering a completely online Winterterm in 2005-06 with 18 classes and 160 enrollments. Annually, the program has grown with more courses and more students. During the 2007-08 session there were more than 350 enrollments in 34 courses, which is almost a 120 percent increase since the college began offering the online semester-between-semesters.
“Many students have utilized Winterterm as a way to catch up or get ahead on their college work without having to sacrifice time with their families,” said SUNY Canton Associate Provost Pauline A. Graveline. “Students appreciate the convenience and flexibility of online courses, especially during the holidays and January.”
Already, more than 150 students have signed up for Winterterm courses this year with several weeks remaining before the session begins. The rise mirrors the overall popularity of online courses offered during the college’s Fall, Spring, and Summerterm semesters.
Students enroll from all over the country and sometimes internationally for SUNY Canton Winterterm. The college has had members of the armed forces enroll from Afghanistan and Iraq. Students vacationing abroad join students from other colleges, and those at home in upstate New York for online discussions and learning activities. “One of the key components of online courses is the lack of geographic boundaries, yet we maintain the flow of ideas and concepts through individual and group interactions,” Graveline said.?
