Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Golden Key SealTop students in SUNY Canton’s bachelor’s degree programs will now be recognized as members of the Golden Key International Honour Society.

The top 15 percent of third and fourth-year students in each of the College’s bachelor’s degree programs have been invited to participate in the College’s inaugural induction ceremony at 5 p.m., April 5th in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater.

“Our four-year student population is swelling,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “With the increase of students came the need for an honor society to recognize their dedication and commitment to education. We found the Golden Key Honour Society fit our needs and will enable us to grow and foster a continuing commitment to exemplary academics.”

The Golden Key International Honour Society offers its members over $600,000 annually through scholarship and award programs. The society also promotes College and community service opportunities to help students grow personally and gain leadership experience.

“When we began the transition to a four-year College nearly a decade ago we began seeing more students who wanted to participate in scholarly societies,” said Janice C Robinson, an Associate Professor of accounting and business and the primary faculty advisor for the local chapter of the society. “The Golden Key Honour Society places a great emphasis on leadership, mirroring SUNY Canton’s own educational values and ideals.”

She said she hoped many students who have earned acceptance into the College’s two-year honor society would join the College’s Golden Key chapter as they continue their education in four-year programs.

Golden Key International Honour Society was founded in 1977. There are approximately 375 chapters worldwide. In New York, there are Golden Key Chapters at Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, the University at Buffalo, United States Military Academy at West Point, Columbia University, among many other State University of New York and private colleges.

The College also has local chapters of: Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for two year students; Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society for students in academic development programs; Alpha Phi Sigma National Honor Society for criminal justice and criminal investigation students; Sigma Beta Delta National Honor Society for business, management and administration professionals; and Tau Alpha Pi National Honor Society for students in engineering technologies.
