SUNY Potsdam & SUNY Canton Host Regional ‘Harnessing Systemness’ Conference

SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton will host colleagues from State University of New York campuses across Northern New York tomorrow, for “Harnessing Systemness: Regional Discussions on Efficiency and Excellence.” This event is an opportunity for regional campuses to learn from neighboring institutions and foster greater collaboration.

Shared Services

SUNY Vice Chancellor for Financial Services Brian Hutzley will attend the conference and speak about the nationally recognized success of shared services between SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam.

“By sharing services with other campuses in the region, every SUNY college and university in New York has put itself in a better position to do more for its students,” said Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “From sharing online tutoring programs and clinical training facilities to collaborating on purchases and course offerings, SUNY campuses have embraced this initiative with commendable action.”

Tomorrow’s regional discussion will include campus-specific examples, as well as breakout sessions covering strategic areas, so peers from an array of institutions can discuss ideas to successfully share services.

The conference will be offered at SUNY Potsdam, and will be held in the Barrington Student Union Multi-Purpose Room from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will move to Kellas Hall from 1 to 4 p.m.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 9 to 10 a.m.: “From Roots to Results: The Canton-Potsdam Story,” keynote presented by shared Vice President for Finance and Administration Natalie Higley.
  • 10 a.m. to noon: Presentations on shared services at SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam, featuring employees from the business affairs group for both campuses.
  • 1 to 1:30 p.m.: Welcome and introductions with CFO Hutzley and SUNY Potsdam Interim President Dennis L. Hefner.
  • 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Breakout sessions
  • 2:45 to 3:15 p.m.: Discussion on breakout session outcomes
  • 3:30 to 4 p.m.: Closing remarks

SUNY’s shared services initiative is an opportunity to provide greater efficiencies and improved services to our students. Through a series of strategic priorities and projects SUNY’s will enhance the core academic and student services missions of our campuses by redirecting resources to them from administrative and non-instructional functions, thereby allowing campuses to devote resources toward achieving the goals of student access, completion and success.

“Harnessing Systemness: Regional Discussions of Efficiency and Excellence” are events are designed to bring together campuses from the same geographic regions to in order to provide them better understanding of the shared services initiative, celebrate progress, share best practices, discussion challenges, and foster a collaborative culture across SUNY. The goal is to provide campuses with basic information about the initiative, and through the use of facilitated breakout discussions, provide participating campuses with an opportunity to learn from each other.

The immediate measurable goal of SUNY’s shared services initiative is the savings and reinvestment of $100 million over three years. To date, SUNY has identified more than $20 million in redirected savings, including new faculty hires, financial aid programs, scholarships, tutoring and academic advisement.

SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton are sharing services in areas such as purchasing, budgeting, accounts payable, travel and information technology. They also share a chief information officer, chief of police, assistant vice president for human resources, environmental health and safety director, veteran’s affairs officer, interlibrary loan specialist, upholsterer and other positions.

SUNY Appoints Dr. Joseph C. Hoffman as Acting President of SUNY Canton

President HoffmanThe State University of New York Board of Trustees on Tuesday, May 7 appointed Dr. Joseph C. Hoffman as Acting President of SUNY Canton effective June 1.

Dr. Hoffman has worked at SUNY Maritime since 1977, serving as a mathematics and computer science professor and was named a distinguished teaching professor in 2001. He also served as the college’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2006 to 2012.

“Dr. Hoffman comes to SUNY Canton with an extensive history as a powerful and productive campus leader at SUNY Maritime College since 1997,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The students, faculty, and staff at SUNY Canton are certain to benefit from Dr. Hoffman’s experience and leadership as acting president.”

Dr. Hoffman earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from SUNY Maritime College in 1975. He went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics from Adelphi University in 1977, and he received his doctorate in education from LaSalle University in 1998. The SUNY Board of Trustees awarded him the distinguished teaching professor title in 2001. He also served as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve from May 1975 to August 1992.

“I am honored to be chosen as acting president of SUNY Canton,” Dr. Hoffman said. “The College has a strong reputation in many areas, and I look forward to leading the campus.”

Dr. Hoffman will replace Dr. Carli C. Schiffner, who has served as Interim President since September 2012. Dr. Schiffner will step down as interim president May 31 to become Vice President of Instruction at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington State.

“I would like to thank President Schiffner for her hard work and leadership,” Dr. Hoffman said. “I hope to build upon her efforts and continue to lead the College in a positive direction.”

Dr. Schiffner said Dr. Hoffman was an exceptional choice to lead SUNY Canton into the future.

“We’re delighted and excited to have Dr. Hoffman join the SUNY Canton community,” Dr. Schiffner said. “With his background at SUNY and his familiarity within the colleges of technology sector, Dr. Hoffman will be able to make an easy transition to SUNY Canton and will no doubt be successful.”

Dr. Hoffman, and his wife, Nancy, are both natives of Long Island. She will be joining him in his move to Canton.

“Nancy and I are looking forward to becoming members of the SUNY Canton community,” Dr. Hoffman said “And we look forward to living in the North Country.”

In his nearly 36 years at SUNY Maritime, Dr. Hoffman has chaired two Middle States Commission on Higher Education steering committees, leading to successful reaccreditation efforts. He also led the campus’ strategic planning efforts in 2011 and had participated in previous strategic planning efforts. Dr. Hoffman is a delegate on the U.N.’s International Maritime Organization, representing the International Association of Maritime Universities. He has co-authored two books, co-founded the Maritime Academic Council which consists of deans from all six State Maritime Academies. Dr. Hoffman also worked from 1980 to 2006 at Adelphi University, University College for Adults, serving as an adjunct instructor and chair for the Mathematics and Computer Information Systems Department.

Two SUNY Canton Students Receive Chancellor’s Awards

A student who helped build a primary school in South Sudan and the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey captain each received a Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

“The students we honor have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists and community volunteers,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher at the April 4th awards ceremony in Albany. “By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride.”

Zachary J. Smith, an Industrial Technology Management major from Lisbon, was a recipient of the Canino Scholar Award and the College’s Academic Award in recognition of holding the highest grade point average while he was in one of the College’s certificate programs.

Smith is also the bachelor’s-level Outstanding Graduate for the year and will be honored at SUNY Canton’s Commencement Ceremony.

“I will earn three degrees in eight semesters when I graduate in May,” Smith said. “To achieve this, I’ve taken large class loads during regular semesters and additional classes during Summer Session and Winterterm.”

Smith also designed, engineered, managed and led the building of a training facility and primary school in South Sudan in the spring of 2012 through a Christian organization. “My faculty adviser thought this project would fit well within my academic studies,” he added. “Upon graduation, I hope to return to Central Africa, employing the skills I’ve acquired at SUNY Canton to lead further humanitarian and development projects.”

He was the vice president of Campus Ministries Club, and won a certificate of appreciation from the Christian Fellowship Center in Madrid.

John Payne

John Payne, a Sports Management major from Manchester, N.H., and originally from Port Moody, B.C., was the men’s ice hockey captain from 2011 to 2013, and was among the select few players to reach 100 goals during his SUNY Canton hockey career. He was vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board and the president of the Sports Management Student Association.

He received Academic All-American awards from three conferences and received the Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award in 2012. He was the recipient of four scholarships through SUNY Canton foundation.

“John’s leadership skills extend beyond the ice and locker room,” said Matthew G. Metcalf, assistant athletic director. “He always volunteers and participates in community service projects in the local community.”

His volunteer work included community service projects as part of the Roos Give Back program, volunteering at the Grace Episcopal Church’s Friday Soup Kitchen meal and participating in the Reading Roos program at local elementary schools.

Payne is currently interning with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

SUNY Canton to Implement Standardized Financial Aid Award Letter

SUNY CantonSUNY Canton will adopt a new, standardized Financial Aid Award Letter alongside the State University of New York this fall.

All of the SUNY system’s 64 campuses will use the letter for the 2013-2014 academic year, as part of the SUNY Smart Track™ campaign, which promotes transparency in college financing.

The new award letter will allow students and their families to see clearly the cost of attendance and financial aid offerings at each campus, including campus-specific information such as graduation rate, median borrowing and loan default rate. SUNY is the first and largest public system of higher education nationally to implement such a tool for students and families.

“Students can expect to see the new letter as early as April,” said SUNY Canton’s Director of Financial Aid Kerrie L. Cooper. “It will really help students and their families compare colleges and help them in the decision process.”

Cooper serves on the committee of financial aid directors who helped SUNY develop the standardized letter. “It is exceptionally important that the financial aid process be as open and transparent as possible,” she added.

Development of the standard financial aid award letter was first announced when SUNY launched its Smart Track™ campaign in September. With the launch, SUNY adopted the concept of transparency of financial aid and college costs and the system began offering students the most proactive, comprehensive financial aid information and services in the country.

“While college students across the country are taking on more loan debt than ever before, SUNY Smart Track™ gives our prospective students the most comprehensive and transparent financial aid information available so that they can make informed decisions about how to pay for their college education,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The standard award letter will allow prospective students and their families to easily compare colleges within SUNY and view a full outline of the financial commitment associated with their education.”

More recently, in the 2013 State of the University Address, Chancellor Zimpher announced that SUNY Smart Track™ would contribute to a wider system-wide goal of decreasing the loan default rate of SUNY students by at least five percent over the next five years.

The average indebtedness of a SUNY graduate is $22,575, well below the national average of $26,600. The vast majority of SUNY student loan borrowers repay their loans successfully.

The SUNY Smart Track™ Award Letter was developed by a committee of campus Financial Aid Directors, and others, who were tasked with adopting the intent of the federal Financial Aid Shopping Sheet while creating a unique version for SUNY. Additionally, the campaign calls for an expansion of SUNY’s Student Loan Service Center, early engagement of students at risk of default, and providing new and improved online resources such as a net price calculator, chats with financial aid experts, and financial literacy materials.

SUNY Canton Partners with Subaru in a Public – Private Partnership

Subaru Distributors Corporation has made SUNY Canton its newest corporate training center.

The announcement was made today (Thursday, August 23) at an open house celebration. Subaru and area dealers will be contributing approximately $500,000 in tools, diagnostic equipment, and brand new cars to the College over the next five years to facilitate the partnership.

“SUNY Canton exemplifies the ‘Power of SUNY’ and how we can work with distinguished private sector partners like Subaru to boost economic opportunities across the state,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher in a letter to the College. “I commend Subaru Distributors Corp. and North Country Subaru Dealers for recognizing the strength of the SUNY system and SUNY Canton’s state-of-the-art and newly renovated Automotive Laboratory.”

Through the new partnership, automotive technology students can become certified to work with Subaru. Additionally, a third of the Subaru dealers in New York can send their technicians for training at SUNY Canton, saving the company money on travel to more distant training centers.

“The SUNY Canton Subaru Training Center will be an inspiration for our automotive technology students and will be an example of the value of our partnerships for other corporations,” said Interim SUNY Canton President Carli C. Schiffner. “The training center will significantly impact our students’ educational opportunities, as well as increase the prestige of our automotive technology program.”

The partnership was first formed when Brandon J. Baldwin, an assistant professor in the automotive program was introduced to Barry A. Wells, executive vice president of Subaru Distributors Corp. Wells graduated from SUNY Canton in 1975, and earned a second degree from the College in 2010.

According to Baldwin, students who complete the training will be exposed to the latest in automotive technology. “Subaru will give them an added edge as they begin their career search,” he said.

Wells pointed out that the collaboration is a great investment from Subaru’s perspective, because students who complete the training and go on to work for the company will already have the specific skills needed, saving dealerships thousands of dollars.

The surprise announcement of the new public-private partnership in SUNY Canton’s Automotive Laboratories drew more than 50 guests. The labs were packed with the latest model Subaru vehicles.

“This is also another outstanding partnership between alumni and SUNY Canton,” said SUNY Canton Vice President for Advancement David M. Gerlach. “The power of our successful alumni reaching out to assist our community and our current and future students is profound and deeply appreciated.”

Dealerships in attendance included, Barstow Subaru in Potsdam, Fuccillo Subaru in Watertown, and Bill McBride Subaru in Plattsburgh.

Two SUNY Canton Students Earn Recognition from SUNY Chancellor

A member of the SUNY Canton College Activities Board and a dedicated student worker were both selected as recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.

Britney G. Livingston, a liberal arts major from Lisbon and Kenneth A. Burwell, a bachelor of science – nursing major, from Canton both recently received this award in person from SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher.

“The students we honor today have taken full advantage of the academic and extracurricular programs that SUNY provides both in the classroom and in the community,” said Zimpher.

Livingston was recognized for her ongoing commitment to the College and extensive support of the Student Activities Offices programs. She is the vice president for the SUNY Canton chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a recipient of two scholarships created by Distinguished Alumnus John L. Halford of Gouverneur and a recipient of the Perry Family Scholarship.

“Britney is an excellent student,” said Patrick LaPierre, an associate professor of history, who has worked with Livingston in the past. “She takes her work seriously and she displays traits that bode well for her future success. She is an active steward of her educational future. She represents the Chancellor’s Award with distinction.”

Additionally, she is a representative for the Student Government Association, a member of SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy’s Student Ambassador committee, a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, and has been an orientation leader. She’s made both the deans’ and president’s list for her academic success.

Burwell was recognized for his academic excellence and his work with several departments and offices on campus. He is a member of SUNY Canton’s chapter of the Golden Key Honor Society for four-year students, has worked with the College’s Upward Bound program, and is a student assistant in the Davis Health Center.

“Kenny has proven his dedication by spending many hours organizing, arranging, and assisting with our education outreach programs,” said Patricia Todd, director of the Davis Health Center. “The students love it! He does whatever it takes to make the programs a success.”

He is also a member of the St. Lawrence Area Poets and a red belt in Tang So Do, a Korean martial arts program. He has made the president’s list for his outstanding academic success.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence acknowledges students who have successfully demonstrated integrating academic excellence with leadership, campus involvement, community service, the arts, athletics, and career achievement.

SUNY Canton President Responds to SUNY Chancellor’s Nancy L. Zimpher’s Address

SUNY CantonSUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy applauded SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher’s plan to create a disciplined system of success during her annual State of the University Address.

Kennedy said that SUNY Canton best fits within the overall plans to create more online courses for all SUNY students, share services, and to extend outreach to pre-college educational programs.

“Chancellor Zimpher has marked a path for the success of our current and future generations of students,” Kennedy said. “We are no strangers to growth, adaptation, and innovation. We’ve established a clear model for successful online learning through SUNY Canton OnLine, and hope to expand our offerings to more students from more places.”

The President explained that the college is currently exploring new ways to share resources among colleges, including nearby SUNY Potsdam and researching ways to extend shared services with SUNY Plattsburgh. Earlier this semester, Kennedy created a dedicated taskforce to initiate discussions with other colleges about shared administrative services to better accommodate students.

“A critical component in the overall transformation the Chancellor pointed out has already begun locally,” Kennedy said. “Earlier this semester, we hosted senior leaders from SUNY’s Information Technology team. We’ve fared very well in their overall expectations and our systems fit well within the broader scope of the SUNY System. We look forward to working with SUNY further to expand collaborations among colleges.”

Additionally, the College has extended its high school outreach, offering college-level courses in nearby high schools including Ogdensburg Free Academy and Massena Central through a New York State Department of Education grant. The new program allows high school students to begin accumulating college-level credits prior to graduation. Additionally, the College has a special project with Heuvelton Central High School allowing more than 40 senior-level students to earn six college credits in English, and ongoing distance learning initiatives at area high schools.

“Students who earn college credits in high school are more likely to graduate and successfully attend college,” Kennedy noted. “It helps students create a realistic expectation of college-level courses. We are offering courses that will help them when they enter SUNY Canton or almost any other SUNY college.”

SUNY Canton offers almost 200 online courses each semester, and more than 4,000 students are scheduled to enroll in at least one course each semester. The college also has eight completely online bachelor’s degrees, which increases accessibility to community college and two-year students.

SUNY Canton additionally offers high-needs majors that help students graduate from college and step directly into a career. “By targeting the careers with the highest growth and need, we are offering our students a competitive advantage for future success within today’s economy,” he said.

Two SUNY Canton soccer team captains from Lowville won Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence.

“These students are proven leaders, athletes, artists, community servants, and much more,” Zimpher said. “They represent the future of our state and are perfect examples of The Power of SUNY. I congratulate all of the students receiving recognition and thank them for the positive impact each of them has had on SUNY and the communities we serve.”

Martin has been a math tutor for three years, a member of the alternative and renewable energy club, served on the College’s Intercollegiate Athletic Board and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was recognized as a Daktronics-NAIA scholar athlete, and an NAIA honorable mention All-American, and was the outstanding scholar athlete in men’s soccer this year.

“Justin is upbeat and friendly,” said Daniel J. Gagliardi, associate professor of mathematics. “He is also well organized and has a tremendous work ethic. He is generous with his knowledge and is always willing to help his peers.”

In soccer, he played 61 games and had one goal and one assist. Martin was part of the team’s strong defensive line that only allowed 2.4 goals per game during his career.

Waryasz has been recognized as a member of the All-Sunrise Conference women’s soccer team during both of her years at the College and this year was named the outstanding scholar athlete in women’s soccer by the conference. She’s worked as a peer tutor and has volunteered to help Canton community members clean their homes and lawns each spring. She’s made the president’s list for her outstanding grades for three consecutive semesters, and received an honorable mention acknowledgement during the College’s annual Scholarly Activities Celebration.

“Angie is a fantastic student, a great player, and a wonderful teammate,” said Kate Thomas-Moody, head women’s soccer coach. “She works as tirelessly in the classroom as she does on the soccer field. She has a great work ethic and I’m certain that she is going to be very successful after SUNY Canton.”

She scored 19 goals and had 13 assists and played 35 games during her two years at the College.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence is awarded annually to both a bachelor’s and associate degree student from SUNY Canton.

SUNY Canton President Praises Governor’s Higher Ed Reform

SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy expressed high praise for Governor David A. Paterson’s proposed reforms to the State’s system of public higher education. The Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act released today is a sweeping reform package that Kennedy described as the most important and influential piece of SUNY legislation he has seen since becoming the president of SUNY Canton 16 years ago.

“I couldn’t be more optimistic,” Kennedy said. “The Governor’s proposals will transform the way SUNY schools will be able to do business. It will give the entire SUNY system the type of autonomy and flexibility needed to be successful, and it will enable SUNY colleges and universities to become more creative and more independent in running their businesses.”

Kennedy, who is the second longest tenured President in the SUNY system, noted that although SUNY and CUNY colleges will experience budget cuts in the upcoming fiscal year, those cuts will be counterbalanced by the decrease in regulation and the added freedom to generate more income.

“I believe the cuts will be manageable in light of the ability to run our businesses more independently, creatively, and strategically,” Kennedy said. “The leadership demonstrated by the Governor and Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher in creating this act has been incredible and should be lauded. It is extraordinary.”

Kennedy added, “This act will allow schools the ability to protect jobs, preserve the high quality of a SUNY education, affordably continue to educate the people of New York State, and grow as economic generators to help lead the way out of this recession. I hope others will join me as staunch advocates of this act and help others to recognize its importance to the SUNY system, New York State, and its great citizens.”

Approximately 800 students took courses during the 2009-2010 Winterterm session. Enrollment increased nearly 60 percent from last year and is now five times as large as the 160 students who enrolled in the first Winterterm session four years ago. 5. Coach Martin Keeps Winning

The American Hockey Coaches Association announced that former Hockey Coach Terry Martin was the 2009 recipient of the prestigious John “Snooks” Kelley Founders Award. Martin was the college’s head coach for 24 seasons (1974-1999), compiling a record of 527-211-29, including a 102-11-8 mark in his final four seasons. His teams won 12 national championship titles and were runner-ups five times. » More

The SUNY Canton American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge Team hit it big in Vegas on Labor Day weekend by building a better bridge than any other college in the nation. The largest and most comprehensive fundraising campaign in SUNY Canton’s 100-year history was successfully concluded after raising $11 million for scholarships and overall college enhancements. 1. Enrollment Tops the Charts

SUNY Canton smashed its all-time high enrollment record during the Fall 2009 Semester with more than 3,300 students. There was a 20 percent increase in first-year, full-time students, and a 10 percent increase in overall enrollment from the previous year.
