Following a Watertown Daily Times and St. Lawrence Plaindealer editorial entitled, SUNY Central’s Trickle-Dumb Economics, SUNY Canton’s mascot Roody the Kangaroo was feeling a little unloved. So, he hopped down to the newspaper offices on Friday to seek out Editor Jeffrey A. Savitskie (JAS) to communicate his hurt feelings.
The newspaper newsroom erupted with laughter at the sight of the seven footer’s attempts to correspond.
Once invited inside, Roody met with Mr. Savitskie, who explained he meant no slight of either Roody or the Roos nickname. He said he was merely hypothesizing on whether SUNY officials were fond of the moniker. And then, in a remarkable moment full of furry emotion, the editor expressed his true fondness for the marsupial.
Roody’s ride to and from downtown also created quite a stir. He was seated in a car with his ears sticking out of the sun roof, which is a must for animals with his type of build.
(Special thanks to the staff at the Watertown Daily Times and Northern New York Newspapers, and especially Editor Jeffrey A. Savitskie for their open-minded attitude about meeting with a kangaroo and for the fun that ensued).
