Holidays

Academic year staff observe those holidays and other breaks built into the academic calendar. Calendar year and college year professional staff observe those legal holidays identified by the Board of Trustees which fall within their work year. The college observes:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Lincoln's Birthday
  • Washington's Birthday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Election Day
  • Veteran's Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Employees who are eligible to observe holidays are granted a compensatory day off when a holiday falls on a Saturday. An employee who is required to work on a holiday shall be granted a compensatory day off, which shall be scheduled at a time mutually convenient to the employee and the college within twelve (12) months from the day granted. Specific holiday entitlements are described in more detail in various collective bargaining agreements.

The campus will follow SUNY’s liberal leave definition/policy of: times where a VP or Department Head can make a designation in their area to use a liberal leave policy (i.e., bad storms, a holiday when classes are in session, etc.). In those cases, a VP can determine that employees can take the day (or part of the day) off without seeking prior approval. They are still required to charge their vacation accruals.

The area VPs have determined that liberal leave will be observed as noted above – with the following exceptions: the Admissions Office, the Advancement/College Foundation Office, and the One-Hop Shop will be minimally staffed (Note ~ the day after Thanksgiving is an exception.), unless otherwise determined by the area VP. Employees taking liberal leave must have and charge appropriate vacation accruals. If an office is staffed, they must accept phone calls.

Holiday staffing levels are as follows:

  • Minimal Staffing: This level of staffing generally provides for telephone coverage of administrative offices; however those areas with academically related functions may require more staffing. Appropriate staffing levels are determined by each functional Vice President/Department Head.
  • Essential Services: This generally means only University Police, heating and emergency operations. Any additional staffing requires prior approval of the Vice President for Administration.

It should be noted that various collective bargaining agreements provide for paid holidays throughout the year. Not all contracts are identical. This listing sets forth the College’s policy with respect to holiday staffing; it does not authorize holiday pay for all employees.

+ Election Day and Lincoln’s Birthday are designated as floating holidays in most employee contracts. In the UUP Agreement, the Friday after Thanksgiving has traditionally been designated a holiday in lieu of Washington’s Birthday.

* On the Friday after Thanksgiving, a liberal leave policy will be in effect for non-essential services. Employees are encouraged to take the day off with appropriate charges to leave credits.

** When a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.

*** When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the State has the option to designate another day as the holiday or give a floater.

Unless otherwise noted, office hours are 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
