Description of Duties

The State University of New York (SUNY) college at Canton invites qualified applicants for a full-time Assistant Director position in the Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership Department beginning as soon as possible. Position will remain open until filled.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership at SUNY Canton supports the design, planning, implementation, and evaluation of student leadership development and training programs. The role involves overseeing late-night and weekend programs, supporting the management of the Miller Campus Center, and being responsible for key campus traditions. The Assistant Director collaborates on organizing educational, cultural, social, and recreational events for the entire student body to enhance communication, group planning, and engagement skills. The position requires working closely with student leaders and supporting the growth of clubs and organizations within the SUNY Canton community.

 

This position will be very instrumental and supportive with our continued efforts within the area of the development of co-curricular programs, whether students are learning fully online or in person. This role will coordinate programming and services for our students, with an emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and promotion of available mental health resources, which seeks to further enhance the college’s institutional goals and mission. This role will also support programs that will foster the growth of our students as campus and world leaders, who we hope will become positive contributors to their future communities. Overall, this position will be supportive in the promotion and enhancement of positive student citizenship, which seeks to develop character. The goal is that with this support, students will become more involved and engaged within the campus community, through serving on committees, while truly understanding the importance of volunteering and civic responsibilities. This position will promote the activities program and its services to the students in a manner that encourages greater participation within the student life of the college, which will lead to better retention of students.

 

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Student Engagement & Leadership, this position will perform the following duties:

 

  • Assist in managing student activity fees budget of $500,000+, which provides a wide variety of activities and programs to the campus and the broader community.
  • Ensure that all required permits, contracts, and documentation are submitted & obtained in a timely manner, in accordance with the Office of Student Activities, Involvement, & Leadership Process Manual.
  • Assist in the development, planning, coordination, and implementation of event logistics prior to the semester and throughout the entire Academic Year. This position will also ensure that all in-person events are adequately staffed, and the health and safety of all participants is a priority. This position will also ensure that there is oversight of online student programming, as needed.
  • Ensure documentation for the monthly events calendar is reviewed and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the oversight of advertising and marketing events.
  • Assist in office coverage by providing various administrative support.
  • Assist in the supervision of the campus center facility. Assist in the room reservation process for the Miller Campus Center.
  • Provide operational assistance to S.G.A. & C.A.B. Executive Boards, as well as student clubs and organizations.
  • Provide advice and counsel as needed when attending C.A.B. executive and club meetings. Advice is given, as needed, to the C.A.B. Executive Board and C.A.B. members on policy, procedures, and administration.
  • Assist with managing the facility by ensuring that cleanliness is maintained after club and organization events.
  • Must perform work within a strict timeline to meet scheduled deadlines.
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Perform other job duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Engagement.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Minimum of one to three plus years of professional work experience required, preferably customer service related.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills required.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree, preferred.
  • Audio/sound and light production experience strongly preferred.
  • Individuals should have a wide degree of creativity.
