Gender Inclusive Housing

The Office of Residence Life seeks to provide a living environment that is welcoming to all gender identities outside of the traditional understanding of gender as only male and female. We acknowledge inclusivity and intersectionality within a safe space regardless of biological sex plays a vital role and provides students with access to both traditional and gender inclusive living spaces.

Incoming students may indicate on their housing application interest in living in the designated space; the department will do their best to accommodate those requests. Any student living in those designated spaces may have a roommate/ bathroom mate whose gender expression is different than their own. This option is available for incoming and current students. Returning students will have an opportunity to live in this community during the housing lottery process.

As with traditional romantic couples, the department does not encourage romantically involved residents to live in shared spaces as it presents many obstacles and challenges especially in the case the relationship ends. We respect the privacy of our residents and will not request this information in the application process.

In addition to the traditional housing license to which all residential students agree, the SPECTRUM Housing Contract (that will be provided upon move in) will outlines the specific expectations of residents living on the floor.

Examples of key policies outlined by the Housing Guide include:

  • Take a stand on bullying
  • Encouragement of healthy social relationships
  • Encouragement of Inclusivity
  • Continued and consistent implementation of SUNY Canton’s policies and mission including but not limited to the standing code of conduct
