Description of Duties
The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Canton invites qualified applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position in the Library Department, beginning January 5, 2026.
The Instruction & Digital Scholarship Librarian will be a student-centered position focused on advancing teaching, learning, and research. As part of the learning commons model at SUNY Canton, this position will blend information literacy instruction, digital scholarship, and research support, and explore and apply emerging technologies, including AI. Reporting to the library director, the librarian will collaborate with the other librarians and learning commons staff to foster student access and success. The librarian will also work with faculty and colleagues across the campus to provide information literacy, instructional programming, digital literacy and research methods, and the responsible use of emerging technologies.
Responsibilities
Instruction & Outreach
- Design and deliver information literacy instruction across the curriculum, from first year to graduate-level courses.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate information, digital, and AI literacy into assignments and programs.
- Develop online learning modules, tutorials, and guides to support flexible and scalable learning.
- Promote library services and resources through workshops, outreach initiatives, and campus partnerships.
Digital Scholarship & Research
- Consult with faculty, staff, and students on digital scholarship projects, including text mining, data visualization, GIS, digital exhibits, and open publishing.
- Support research design, data management planning, metadata practices, and digital preservation at the undergraduate and graduate level.
- Guide copyright, licensing, and open access publishing.
- Collaborate with colleagues to sustain digital collections and repositories.
Emerging Technologies & AI
- Explore the role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in research, teaching, and library services.
- Develop programming to help students and faculty critically and ethically engage with AI and digital tools.
- Assist faculty in integrating AI into pedagogy and research while addressing issues of bias, transparency, and equity.
- Evaluate and pilot new technologies for potential use in the learning commons.
Collaboration & Service
- Work with other learning commons units to provide accessible and holistic support
- Serve as a liaison to academic departments, fostering strong partnerships
- Engage in professional development and scholarship to stay current in instruction, digital scholarship, and emerging technologies
- Engage in ongoing assessment for the purpose of meeting academic and non-academic requirements for student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness
- Provide general librarian responsibilities, including reference, collection development, and maintenance.
- Contribute to the library, learning commons, college, and professional service
Qualifications
Required:
- Masters in Library Science or Masters in Information & Library Science from an ALA accredited institution; or equivalent.
- A commitment to working with a diverse population of students to provide access and support that contributes to their academic experience and reducing barriers that create retention risk.
- Experience in the design and delivery of information literacy preferable in an academic setting.
- Familiarity with digital scholarship.
- Awareness of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
- Attention to detail, organization skills, communication skills, and the willingness to collaborate with others.
