Description of Duties
SUNY Canton is looking for a full-time Director of Facilities Planning and Chief Sustainability Officer to join the Physical Plant team.
Reporting to the Vice President of Administration, in close coordination with the teaching, research and public service programs, the Director of Facilities Planning is responsible for the total short/ long-range facilities planning, construction, major rehabilitation, and space utilization program on campus. In coordination with the academic, student personnel, finance and management, physical plant operation and maintenance, and other programs on campus.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the University’s primary representative in all phases of capital improvement planning, construction, substantial rehabilitation, and related programs.
- Leads, supervises, directs, and assesses the activities and performance of a multi-disciplined team of professional and support personnel engaged in Facilities planning, design, and construction management.
- Frequently works with University Leadership, Academic Leadership, System Administration, the State University Construction Fund, architects, and engineers to mediate competing priorities and ensure progress toward the long-term health of the campus facilities.
- Actively participates in the capital budgeting process and plays a key role in developing, monitoring, and communicating objectives.
- Monitors adherence to all financial guidelines; Assesses, strategizes, and manages potential risks to the budget; Ensures timely submission of reports related to project administration to the appropriate System Administration and state offices.
- Maintains continuous communication with stakeholders, users, and University administration, providing regular updates on project status and addressing issues as they arise; Provides facilities expertise to faculty, staff, and student committees; Coordinates development with local government, agencies and citizen groups.
- Aligns closely the functions of the facilities program with those of the physical plant operation; Directs activities in space development, utilization, and arrangement.
- This position acts as Chief Sustainability Officer and supports the further development of SUNY Canton’s Sustainability Plan while aligning campus, SUNY and state directives within targeted goals across all facets of Facilities Operations.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of 4 years of related experience in construction design, construction management, and/or facilities management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge and experience planning and managing construction and renovation projects.
- Knowledge of the various construction and building maintenance trades such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing and heating and structural maintenance.
- Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its implications on construction and renovation projects.
- Ability to prepare requests for proposal (RFP), negotiate contracts with outside contractors.
- Experience preparing and maintaining complex operational and project budgets.
Preferred:
- Advanced degree in the fields of architecture, planning, or engineering and.
- A registered architect’s certificate, a registered planner’s certificate, or a professional engineer’s license or equivalent national recognition.
- Several years of significant and major experience in the planning and development of higher education facilities. Knowledge of utility distribution systems.
