Description of Duties

The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Canton invites qualified applicants for a full-time staff position in the TRIO Department beginning September 1, 2025.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director for TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) provides holistic advising and program support to first-generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities in accordance with SSS grant objectives. This position is responsible for managing daily operational tasks for the TRiO Office, providing academic advising to a caseload of approximately 75–200 students, overseeing student workers, preparing program data reports, and coordinating student workshops in collaboration with campus partners.

  • Manage daily operations of the TRiO SSS program in coordination with the Director.
  • Monitor and track program activities to ensure compliance with federal grant regulations and up-to-date program interventions.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation for internal and U.S. Department of Education federal reporting purposes (Excel and Starfish).
  • Assist with the recruitment and selection of TRiO participants.
  • Provide academic advising, personal support, and resource referrals for a caseload of approximately 75–200 program participants.
  • Assist students in developing academic plans, improving study skills, and navigating financial aid processes.
  • Advocate for students’ academic and personal needs within the campus community.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate student workshops on topics such as academic skills, financial literacy, career readiness, and wellness.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community partners to deliver workshop content.
  • Attend program related conferences and workshops.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, psychology, social work or related field or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles.
  • At least 3 years’ experience working with first-generation, low-income students, and/or students with disabilities.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a student support setting.

Candidate should exhibit the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of academic and financial aid requirements and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of the unique barriers faced by first generation students, low-income students and students with disabilities and their intersectional backgrounds.
  • Understanding of student success software (i.e. Starfish).
  • Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, psychology, social work or related field.
  • Prior experience in a TRiO program or similar federally or state funded programs.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
