Description of Duties
Under general supervision, provides academic, career, and personal counseling to low income, first-generation, and/or disabled students in accordance with SSS grant objectives. Works closely with faculty and staff to plan to implement major program services including advice in post-secondary course selection, financial literacy, graduate school admission, and exposure to cultural events.
Responsibilities
- Assist with recruitment and selection of TRiO participants.
- Assess academic and non-academic needs of TRiO SSS students and develop effective Education Action plans.
- Teach 3 sections of FYEP course (First Year Experience) to TRiO participants (extra compensation as noted in salary listed above).
- Meet weekly with TRiO participants in academic recovery program.
- Monitor the progress of TRiO SSS participants by utilizing the Roo Success flagging system, midterm review appointments and financial aid monitoring systems such as Student Outcome Tracking (SOT) and Student Academic Progress (SAP).
- Help maintain participant records including U.S. Department of Education Student Support Services required documents, Roo Success flagging system and TRiO forms.
- Assist with the coordination of cultural/educational enrichment activities.
- Attend program-related conferences and workshops.
- Contribute to TRiO SSS support, outreach, and assessment.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or Social Work.
- At least three years' experience in counseling and/or instructing low-income, potential first-generation students of diverse backgrounds.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of academic and financial aid requirements and procedures.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Knowledge of unique strengths, challenges, and learning preferences of post-secondary students from low-income, first-generation backgrounds.
- Demonstrated skills in motivating learners.
Preferred:
- Prior experience working in a TRIO program.
- Preference given to applicants with similar backgrounds to the participants.
- Experience in tutoring in STEM areas.
Prior to a final offer of employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, educational and other credential verification, and criminal background check.
