SUNY Canton Unveils New HVAC Trades Associate Degree

The Canino School of Engineering Technology at SUNY Canton has developed a new two-year degree in response to the growing demand for technicians specializing in heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration.  

The HVAC Associate of Occupational Studies Degree program will begin in Fall 2019. The college anticipates approximately 30 students will enroll during the first year.

“We found students who were enrolling in our specialized one-year certificate programs wanted to stay at the college for a two-year degree,” said Canino School of Engineering Technology Dean Michael J. Newtown. “Now we’ve created a new, well-rounded, program that targets their industrial and entrepreneurial interests.”

The dean added that climate-control systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, necessitating the need for advanced training. “Energy efficiency and pollution reduction measures will continue to drive advancements in the industry,” he said. 

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in related fields is projected to grow by 15 percent to 2026, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual wage for HVAC and refrigeration mechanics and installers was approximately $47,000 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $75,000. 

Courses in the new major include hands-on labs specializing in the installation, troubleshooting and repair of HVAC systems, in addition to computers, motor controls, commercial refrigeration, and plumbing. It will also incorporate business and humanities courses to further prepare students for their professional careers.

“The new HVAC curriculum is very sophisticated,” Berman said. “The college is so far ahead of the curve by incorporating English and business courses to create a versatile program. Those skills will be crucial for the next generation of leaders in our organization.”

SUNY Canton also has a two-year HVAC Engineering Technology degree. Both majors couple with four-year programs in Sustainable Energy Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics and Industrial Technology Management.
