Apprenticeships
The State University of New York (SUNY), in partnership with the New York Department of Labor (NYSDOL), offers Registered Apprenticeship programs, focusing on engaging employers to secure paid registered apprenticeships in high-skilled, high demand and competitive wage occupations. The SUNY Apprenticeship Program (SAP) has funding designated through New York State to provide apprenticeship related activities and support related instruction associated with a registered Department of Labor trade.
Qualifying Apprenticeship Sectors
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Healthcare
- Other sectors outside of construction (child care, automotive, etc.)
SUNY Canton has the ability to offer industry roundtables, pre-apprenticeship training and related instruction associated with a registered Department of Labor trade.
Industry Roundtables
Robust and targeted outreach through industry roundtables provides accurate information to employers interested in apprenticeship. Colleges explain their role in providing Related Instruction training, SUNY Apprenticeship Business Developers outline SUNY’s funding options and New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) outlines what is involved with developing a Registered Apprenticeship program. Examples of past SUNY Canton industry roundtables include, manufacturing, police officer, automotive technician, and child care.
Pre-Apprenticeship
Training provides potential apprentices with necessary skills to thrive in and complete their apprenticeship. Examples of training includes basic blueprint reading, computer skills and introduction to manufacturing. There are two opportunities for PA: community-based training and training for incumbent workers.
Related Instruction
Registered Apprentices require a minimum of 144 hours of Related Instruction per year in addition to on-the-job training. Many employers partner with SUNY colleges for this instruction.
- SUNY offers tuition support for registered apprentices to complete the related instruction
- $6000 for apprenticeships less than three years
- $8000 for apprenticeships lasting three to five years
- SUNY also offers employer financial incentives for hiring and continuing to employ apprentices
If you are an employer thinking about establishing a registered apprenticeship program please visit the Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program website and the SUNY Apprenticeship website for more information.
