SUNY Canton aims to inspire students to pursue STEM careers at the fifth annual Engineers Week Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 in Nevaldine Hall.

The event, sponsored by Corning Incorporated Foundation, is free and open to kids of all ages and their families. There will be more than 15 hands-on activities that offer a glimpse into the college’s tech-focused programs.

“We have some really exciting activities and presentations planned, including a virtual reality game experience and an opportunity to watch our “League of Legends” eSports team compete in the new arena,” said Dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology Michael J. Newtown. “Attendees also won’t want to miss a behind-the-scenes look at one of our newest bachelor degree programs, Mechatronics Technology.”

Guests can also learn about robotics, examine global water issues, meet the college’s award-winning steel bridge team, test out virtual reality equipment and more.

The evening’s main event will be a student competition where teams of two will put their engineering skills to the test to build the fastest racer.

Contestants from the winning team in the 9th to 12th grade category will each receive a $1,200 SUNY Canton scholarship. The second-place team will each win a $500 scholarship, and the third-place team will be awarded $100 SUNY Canton gift cards.

First-, second- and third-place prizes in the 3rd to 8th grade category include Lego “Mindstorms” kits and remote-control cars.

In addition to an Open House, the college will host a career fair from noon to 3 p.m. and an alumni panel discussion from 4 to 5 p.m.

All events are being held to commemorate National Engineers Week, which is dedicated to increasing understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers.
