SUNY Canton Holds Summer Esports Camps

Published:

Roster spots for SUNY Canton’s first ever eSports camps are beginning to fill up. Just two weeks after the initial announcement, the college has filled nearly half of its offerings in the summer day camps for middle and high school students.

“We made some adjustments to the pricing and schedule, and people are responding well to the opportunities,” said Charles W. Murray, esports coordinator. “All levels of gamers, from casual to varsity hopefuls, are welcome.”

Cost per week is now $250 per student, with a $25 rate reduction for groups of two or more.

Camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays beginning July 8 in the college’s state-of-the-art esports arena. Gameplay in this facility is typically reserved for varsity collegiate matches and has been opened exclusively during the summer for the camp sessions.

“We’re hoping to reach as many younger gamers as we can through our summer outreach,” said Charles W. Murray, esports coordinator. “In addition to our 24 high-end competition Alienware computers, we have a slew of Xbox One X, PlayStation Pro, and Nintendo Switch consoles for everyone to try out. Students will be amazed with the equipment and the experience.”

Murray will be providing coaching in Blizzard’s “Overwatch” and Epic Games’ “Fortnite.” Other members of the college’s teams will also be on hand to facilitate quality game play. Other SUNY Canton teams include Riot’s “League of Legends,” EA Games’ “FIFA,” and Nintendo’s “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” among others. Campers will be able to play all of these titles, and even participate in competitive quests in Mojang’s “Minecraft.”

SUNY Canton esports camps are designed for gamers entering grade six and up. Lunch will be provided daily. Each session concludes with an awards ceremony. For more information, email Murray at murrayc@canton.edu.
