SUNY Canton Preps for Two-Day Fall Blood Drive

Published:

There will be an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 and Wednesday, Sept 29 in SUNY Canton’s Dana Hall gymnasium.

According to the Red Cross, there is a looming shortage of blood types most needed by patients. They are calling on eligible donors with type O negative and O positive blood to give now to help avoid an emergency.

The college strongly encourages donors to sign up for an appointment in advance using the Red Cross Blood Donor mobile application, or by visiting the Red Cross website. Outside visitors will need to adhere to SUNY Canton’s COVID-19 protocols. Masks or face coverings must be worn inside all campus buildings.

SUNY Canton historically has exceptionally high participation levels and holds blood drives each semester, according to Farren C. Lobdell, director of wellness promotions. During spring 2021, the college collected 38 units of blood from 45 donors, potentially saving 114 lives. In all, the college has held 88 drives and helped collect 4,030 units.

College sorority Alpha Chi Omicron Inc. will be hosting the fall blood drive with members helping with organization and registration. Student clubs and Greek organizations volunteer to help ensure the drives are successful.
