Emergency Preparedness Week Set to Begin Sept. 15 at SUNY Canton
The college will hold a shelter-in-place drill at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
SUNY Canton is scheduling a week of activities designed to prepare faculty, staff and students to respond to emergencies beginning Sept. 15.
“Being prepared is the foundation of an effective emergency response,” said Derek L. Converse, SUNY Canton’s Environmental Health and Safety Manager. “When faculty, staff and students take part in these trainings, they safeguard themselves while contributing to a safer campus community.”
The following trainings and drills are scheduled for the week:
- Fire extinguisher trainings will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, and Tuesday, Sept. 16, on the Rendezvous Terrace behind the Richard W. Miller Campus Center.
- SUNY Canton’s EMS Squad will hold hands-on CPR training sessions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday alongside the fire extinguisher training on the Rendezvous Terrace.
- The EMS squad is holding Opioid Overdose trainings for the college’s residential students at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Heritage Hall, 6 p.m. in Rushton Hall and 7 p.m. in Mohawk Hall. The trainings will continue at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Smith Hall and at 5 p.m. in Kennedy Hall.
- At 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, there will be a college-wide shelter-in-place drill. The training will be announced using the Rave emergency alert system.
- The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control will be inspecting the residence halls from Wednesday through Friday.
During the week, college administrators will hold an Emergency Response Resource Group meeting to review safety protocols, coordinate roles, and ensure the campus is prepared to respond quickly and effectively in a crisis.
