Indigenous Artist, Writer Alex Jacobs to Speak at SUNY Canton in November
In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, the SUNY Canton Living Writers Series will host a renowned Akwesasne Mohawk artist and author who will discuss a collection of essays featuring Haudenosaunee elders and activists.
Alex Jacobs (Karoniaktahke) will read from the book, “American Indigenous Democracy: A Call for Interdependence,” at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Payson Hall, Room 219. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.

The book, to which Jacobs is a contributing author, is eighteen essays centered around contemporary Haudenosaunee leaders and scholars who speak about life in present-day reservations and the Great Law of Peace, which is the unifying code of governance that united these once warring tribes into a truly democratic league of nations.
“It serves as a welcoming volume for a much needed conversation about the origins of our founding documents and more importantly, about the wisdom of Native American ways of living and how they can be applied as an alternative to our present political dilemmas,” according to the publisher.
Jacobs was a founding member of the Akwesasne community newspaper, Indian Time, and is the author of two poetry collections. His artwork has been displayed at the American Indian Archaeological Institute.
