SUNY Canton President Honors Meritorious Award Recipients
Three SUNY Canton employees were recognized by President Zvi Szafran for their professional achievements at a college-wide awards event in May.
Szafran selected Debbie Flack, Sandy Walker and Adrienne C. Rygel, Ph.D., to receive the 2026 President’s Meritorious Service Award.

Debbie Flack and Sandy Walker
Administrative Assistant 1 Debbie Flack and Program Aide Sandy Walker work in the college’s Ready Center, which consists of the Advising, Career Services, and International Programs offices.
Colleagues noted their extensive knowledge about the policies and procedures of all three areas, making them a trusted resource for students. They also handle logistics for major projects throughout the academic year, including career fairs and the annual professional clothing fair.
Nominators said that Flack ensures every student inquiry receives a prompt and accurate response and thoughtfully guides new students through onboarding steps so they can begin their college journey. Walker is a grounding presence for international students on campus, as well as SUNY Canton students studying overseas, ensuring both groups feel supported.

Adrienne C. Rygel, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Professional Geologist Adrienne C. Rygel is the Civil and Environmental Technology program chair. She joined the college in 2008 and developed the four-year program in 2010. She continues to develop curricula, launch new courses and minors, and guide the programs through accreditations. She has cemented connections across campus through university service.
In the classroom and lab, her hands-on, real-world approach keeps students engaged. Rygel weaves anecdotes about her career experience as a geologist and civil engineer to help students envision themselves in similar roles. Through advising, she ensures they get the most out of their education and are on the right path toward a successful career.
In addition to connecting with prospective students and the community at open houses and other information events, she and several students started a chapter of the Society of Women Engineers to encourage more peer-to-peer and mentorship relationships. She is also the faculty advisor for the SUNY Canton American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter and its Steel Bridge Team.
