Bicycle Patrol Unit

The SUNY Canton bicycle patrol unit was established in 1996 in order to provide an additional means of patrolling the campus. Officers assigned to this unit provide the full spectrum of Campus Law Enforcement duties. We view the bicycle patrol unit as ambassadors of community policing.

We have found that the bicycle patrols have increased officer mobility and interaction with the campus community. The bicycle patrol officers believe that the bicycles also lend to increased physical fitness.

An officer rides a bicycle through the Roselle Plaza.

All officers who elect to take part in the bicycle patrol unit are required to go through an intensive bicycle patrol training course. This program trains in the skills required to do patrol and enforcement activities from the modern police mountain bike.

When in operation, the bicycle patrol units concentrate on:

  • High Visibility
  • Community Relations
  • Crime Prevention Activities
  • Parking Lots
  • Footpaths and Footbridges
  • Patrolling other areas not accessible to vehicles, such as bicycle trails and campus open areas
  • Presence at outdoor activities
