Matt Metcalf

Matt is in his 23rd year at SUNY Canton, and is entering his tenth year as a full-time lecturer in the sports management program.  Matt was also an adjunct instructor in the program for two years.  Matt currently teaches Sports Public Relations, Sports Information, Sports Media and Broadcasting, Foundations of Sports Management, Sports Operations and Facility Management, Applied Sports Media and Broadcasting, and International Study Abroad.

Matt started at SUNY Canton in the fall of 2000 as sports information director in the athletic department. Matt oversaw and managed all public relations for the athletic department, including maintaining the athletic department website, writing and dissemination of press releases and game stories, sports photography, compiling statistics for all 14 sports teams, in-game promotions, supervising work-study students, and serving as the communication liaison between the athletic department and the campus, surrounding communities and media outlets.

In 2006, Matt was named assistant athletic director.  In this capacity, he oversaw academic eligibility for the men’s ice hockey team, scheduled officials for home games, managed the necessary insurance policies for the athletic department, worked with coaches on game scheduling, oversaw the copyright protection and licensing of the SUNY Canton Kangaroo logo and brand, served as chairperson on numerous search committees, and served as the chair for the annual Kangaroos Golf Classic. In addition, Matt was the tournament director for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball national championship for two years and he was the tournament director for the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League conference championship. Both events were held at SUNY Canton.

In addition, Matt served as the sports information director for the Sunrise Conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Northeast Football Conference in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Prior to joining SUNY Canton, Matt worked for WPDM/WSNN radio in Potsdam as news director, assistant sports director and salesman.

Matt earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications from St. Bonaventure University, a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy, and is currently working towards a doctorate degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy.

Matt lives in Canton with his wife Meg and daughters Abby (18), Katie (16) and Zizi (13).
