Financial Aid for Summer Study

Financial aid is available for summer study. A student must meet the following requirements to be eligible:

  • Matriculated in a degree program at SUNY Canton.
  • Meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP) requirements at the end of the Spring semester.
  • Enroll in summer courses that are applicable to your current degree program. Your academic advisor will assign you a summer registration code for scheduling access on UCanWeb.

Financial aid you receive in the summer may reduce your eligibility for aid during the academic year or in a subsequent year.

Summer Aid Application Process

Steps What You Need to Do Instructions
Step 1

Complete the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Summer financial aid can not be processed until the 24-25 FAFSA is received. We may require additional documentation. Watch your SUNY Canton email for notices and check your UCanWeb account for financial aid requirements.

Step 2

Complete your 2024-2025 TAP application

A TAP application is required to be completed each year. View your current TAP status online.

Step 3

Meet with your Academic Advisor

Schedule your summer courses in your UCanWeb account.

Step 4

Complete the Summer Billing Survey through your UCanWeb account.

Check yes on the summer billing survey if you are interested in financial aid for the summer.

Step 5

Complete the Summer Financial Aid Application

Read all of the summer aid information before submitting.

** Application will be available in April **

Once available you will be directed to complete the summer financial aid application. The Application will be found in your UCanWeb as an option in the Student Menu.

Step 6

Review your summer financial aid package and confirm your acceptance.

Once your summer financial aid has been determined, you must confirm your acceptance through UCanWeb and pay any remaining balance due on your account.

Be sure to watch your SUNY Canton email – The Financial Aid Office will send an email notification when your summer package has been added to UCanWeb! Your Summer registration will NOT be official until your bill has been paid and/or covered by financial aid.

Types of Summer Financial Aid

Federal Pell Grant - All matriculated students who attend the summer term will be packaged for a summer Pell award if they have a Pell eligible Student Aid Index (SAI), regardless of the number of credits they are enrolled in. Pell awards will be prorated according to enrollment levels. Students should complete the summer aid application to initiate the process of evaluating eligibility. Only students with complete FAFSAs on file can be considered.

Federal Direct Loan (Subsidized and Unsubsidized) - You must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours to be eligible for Federal Direct Loans. Utilizing Federal Direct Loans during the summer term will reduce the amount offered for the fall/spring terms. Federal Regulations allow an annual 12 month maximum loan limit depending on your year in college. Annual eligibility limits apply to the academic year.

This is an example to demonstrate how loans are allocated for a dependent senior undergraduate receiving $7,500 / year. Your yearly amount may differ then this example.

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan - Parent borrowers must also complete the Parent PLUS Loan application on studentaid.gov and pass a basic credit check to be eligible. Parents may borrow up to the amount of the student’s cost of attendance minus other financial aid received, including any other educational loans. Select the summer disbursement term for a summer loan (May-August).

New York State TAP Grant - Under certain circumstances, you can receive a TAP award for summer study that is in addition to your annual TAP award. Such additional awards for the summer study are considered “accelerated” TAP. To read up on accelerated study and eligibility requirements – visit hesc.ny.gov and search for “summer tap”. Also, to be considered for summer TAP you must complete the TAP application on hesc.ny.gov.

Private alternative loans - You may select any lender of your choice. Please allow up to three (3) weeks for processing.
